You are billed for energy, not power
Saving starts with separating power from energy. Wattage is the instantaneous draw while a device is on; the bill is that multiplied by hours, in kilowatt-hours. So a moderate-draw appliance left on all day affects the bill more than a high-draw one used briefly. Always reason with that multiplication when deciding what to tackle first.
Anything that makes or moves heat
Heavy household consumers share a trait: they either generate heat directly (heaters, dryers, rice cooker warming) or move it (air conditioning, refrigeration). Lighting and small electronics are a small share even when left on. Begin with heating, cooling and heat-based appliances.

Where the unit price rises with consumption, savings are not proportional: the higher the tier you sit in, the more each unit saved is worth. Effort therefore pays off most in heavy-use months, which usually means heating and cooling seasons. Tier thresholds vary by region and contract, so check your own bill.
You cannot cut what you do not measure
Guessing leaves you unable to tell what worked. Reviewing monthly usage on your bills and asking what changed in a month that spiked often reveals the cause on its own. For per-appliance figures, a plug-in power meter gives exact numbers.
